Burns lost to Michael Morales via TKO (punches) at 3:39 of Round 1 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Burns was put in this position to serve as cannon fodder for one of the top prospects in the entire sport and he served his role to perfection. Entering as a +400 underdog, outside of one brief takedown which he was able to do nothing with, Gilbert was dominated from start to finish. Never a strong striker to begin with, Burns simply can't take a punch in the latter stages of his career. The lack of durability has left him unable to generate any offense of his own. The end result is a four-fight losing streak dating back to May 2023. The only positive you can say for Burns is that the four setbacks came against the current champion (Jack Della Maddalena), a former champion (Belal Muhammad), and two guys that are going to be fighting for a title sooner than later (Sean Brady, Morales). Set to turn 39 years of age in July, the UFC is going to have to be exceedingly careful who they match Burns up against moving forward if they plan on running him back out there.

Fight moved once again
WelterweightUFC
April 12, 2025
Burns' scheduled welterweight matchup against Michael Morales has been moved to the main event of UFC Apex on May 17, MMAJunkie.com reports.
ANALYSIS
This is the third date for this fight. It was originally scheduled for UFC 314 in April, and then it was bumped to UFC 315 in Montreal on May 10. Now it's been moved to a main event at UFC Apex. Similar to what happened with the previous change of dates, no official reason was provided for the fight being moved.
Fight bumped to UFC 315

February 20, 2025
Burns' scheduled welterweight matchup against Michael Morales has been moved to UFC 315 on May 10 in Montreal, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Originally scheduled for UFC 314 in April, no official reason was provided for the fight being moved. Burns is now seemingly relegated to gatekeeper status following three consecutive losses, and the former title contender finds himself a pretty hefty betting underdog against a contender in Morales who is undefeated as a pro and sporting five consecutive wins in the UFC.
Morales up next
WelterweightUFC
January 18, 2025
Burns will fight Michael Morales at UFC 314 on April 12, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
After losing to Sean Brady in September, Burns' losing streak now sits at three fights. The 38-year-old will surely be desperate to turn things around in April, though doing so against Morales may be easier said than done, as his opponent will enter the bout with a perfect 17-0 professional record.
Losing streak hits three
WelterweightUFC
September 7, 2024
Burns lost to Sean Brady via unanimous decision (45-50, 45-50, 46-49) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
That will do it for Burns' very slim hopes of remaining on the fringes of title contention at 170 pounds. Now 38 years of age, Gilbert was effective at times in this fight, but it almost always came in very short spurts, and Brady was able to wrestle away the momentum almost immediately each time. Burns has never been much of a striker, and his movements appeared slow and labored at his advanced age. He also allowed Brady to land four takedowns in the first 20 minutes, which is a death sentence for a fighter lacking knockout power. Gilbert has lost three in a row and four of his last six. It's difficult to believe the UFC would move on, but the company needs to be exceedingly more careful regarding who it matches Burns up against moving forward.
Will clash with Sean Brady
WelterweightUFC
June 10, 2024
Burns (head) is scheduled to compete against Sean Brady in a five-round welterweight fight at the UFC's Sept. 7 event, per Mike Bohn and Farah Hannoun of MMAJunkie.com.
ANALYSIS
Burns is back just under three months after getting indefinitely suspended following a Jack Della Maddalena TKO. Coming off consecutive losses, he takes on a 16-1 fighter with six wins in the UFC and a lone loss coming off top-three welterweight contender Belal Muhammad. Burns' advantage will come in the form of high-level experience compared to that of Brady, who has not defeated any top-15 welterweight thus far.
